R\u00f6misch-Katholische Kirche \u201cOnze Lieve Vrouw Geboorte\u201d (St. Mari\u00e4 Geburt)<\/h1>\n

Kessel hat eine jahrhundertealte religi\u00f6se Tradition. Hier muss schon 1236 eine romanische Kirche gestanden haben. 1460 wurde eine gotische Kirche errichtet, die durch Kriege am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts niedergebrannt und danach wiederaufgebaut wurde. Beim Abriss der Kirche 1869 fanden die Abbrucharbeiter einen r\u00f6mischen Opferstein, ein Zeichen, dass das Kirchengel\u00e4nde schon sehr lange ein heiliger Ort ist.<\/p>\n

Der ber\u00fchmte Baumeister Cuypers entwarf f\u00fcr Kessel eine neue Kirche in neogotischem Stil, die 1872 fertiggestellt wurde. Sie wurde im 2. Weltkrieg schwer besch\u00e4digt. Turm und Kirchenschiff wurden nach dem Krieg wiederaufgebaut. Heute steht das Gotteshaus unter Denkmalschutz.<\/p>\n
